FAQ's:

Frequently Asked Questions

What does speech & language therapy involve ?

In the first instance you will attend for an initial assessment. The therapist will start by taking a detailed case history, asking questions about your child's medical and developmental history and your concerns about speech & language development. The therapist will then begin by assessing your child's speech, language and communication skills (including listening & attention, play skills and social use of language). The therapist will assess your child through a combination of observation, play and informal and formal tests.
At the end of the session the therapist will feedback to you and will discuss your options, which may be to recommend regular weekly 'blocks' of therapy, review appointments only, out of clinic programmes, referral to another agency or discharge. The therapist will always provide opportunity for questions. A verbal report follows initial assessment. A wriiten summary report can be provided upon request (additonal fee).

Will seeking Independent Speech & Language therapy affect my NHS therapy ?

No. Guidelines set out by the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists endorse collaborative practice. The therapist will discuss this with you at the out set and you can choose to use independent speech & language therapy while waiting to reach the top of the NHS waiting list or you can choose to attend both independent and NHS provision simultaneously or to opt out of NHS provision all together.

How long will I have to wait for an Initial Assessment ?

How do I know that my therapist is state registered ?

How frequently will my speech & language therapy sessions be?

Depending on the nature of the difficulty, regular therapy may be offered weekly or fortnightly. Alternatively, periodic reviews may be more appropriate.
